Question: “If I participate in your research, does that make me a ‘guinea pig’?”

Answer:

  • Those who choose to get involved with our research studies are hardly guinea pigs—they are valued contributors to science and we could not do what we do without them! Anyone considering participation will go through an informed consent process with a researcher who can explain the purpose to the particular study, the procedures, including risks and benefits, and the alternatives to participation. Your questions—each and every one—will be answered and if they are not answered to your satisfaction, you do not need to participate in the study. In fact, you can withdraw consent at any time.
