Social Media’s Impact on Mental Health: A Podcast Conversation

What the Science Says about Benefits and Drawbacks of Social Media on Mental Health
A conversation with colleagues in Norway about social media and mental health.

It was my pleasure to sit down sit down with Mette Espe Myrmæl, a lecturer in psychology at Oslo Nye Høyskole in Oslo, Norway, and talk all things social media and mental health for the University’s podcast, Psykt Interessant.

Previously, we at Columbia have written about managing body image in the digital age, determining whether social media is helping or hurting your eating disorders recovery, and becoming as savvy a consumer of social media as you can be.

In this conversation, Mette and I explore some of the latest research, and consider the role of social comparison, content exposure, social media algorithms, and demographics in trying to answer the broader question: is social media bad for our mental health?
